Read A Mentor

Photo from Joy Tomes “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out […]

For years, I have read books by recent and older authors that have shaped my walk with Jesus. Having a mentor in my life has always been important in my spiritual growth, but there are several “mentors” that I have never met and will never meet. These people have mentored me through their writing and […]

In 1716, American revivalist preacher, theologian, and writer, Jonathan Edwards, penned a list of seventy “resolutions.” These resolutions, unlike most New Years Resolutions, were rooted deeply in a humble desire to obey God’s Word. Edwards began each of these resolutions with the simple word “resolved…” Resolve means to firmly set in one’s heart to do […]

I’ve heard it too many times to count. Statements such as: “I’m a failure at Bible study…” “I just don’t understand anything when I read my Bible…” “Bible study just isn’t for me…” “I never finish a Bible study. I get discouraged by the middle of it and just set it on my bedside table […]

The following blog post was written by Ashley Chestnut, Associate Singles Minister at the Church at Brook Hills. The Story That Speaks One of my most prized possessions is a tattered, torn, and very fragile book. Not only do the words tell a Story, but the tears, the blurred markings, the scribbled notes and the pieces of tape that hold pages together tell that this Story is real. The letters in this book […]

For years, I have read books my recent and older authors that have shaped my walk with Jesus. Having a mentor in my life has always been important in my spiritual growth, but there are several “mentors” that I have never met and will never meet. These people have mentored me through their writing and through their fervent love for Christ. Most people would define themselves as either an “avid reader” or “I never pick up a book non-existent reader.” I used to be the latter. But during college I began to pick up books out of my hunger to know God more and ever since then I haven’t been able to stop reading. When I don’t read books, the fire in my heart starts to fizzle. There is a great stir of the fire in our hearts when we read other’s passions, lessons, and wisdom!
