Talk To Yourself

February 2, 2015  - By Gretchen Saffles

When I was a little girl, I would come into the kitchen and often find my momma talking to herself. I always loved catching her in the act (and still do:). Throughout the years she has faithfully taught me speak truth over the lies that Satan whispers into our ears. As a matter of fact, just this morning she was speaking truth over my weary heart. The cycle was starting again. I was listening to the lies of the Enemy and doubting what God had called me to do. It stopped me dead in my tracks how quickly my morning went from purposeful and joy-filled to confusing and discouraging. The spiral starts when we listen to ourselves instead of talking to ourselves.
Jeremiah 17:9 warns us against the ploys of the heart:

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?”

The word “heart” refers to the inner man, the mind, will, thoughts, passions, and emotions. Now let’s read that verse one more time with the full definition of the word “heart” –

“The heart (inner man, mind, will, thoughts, passions, emotions) is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?”

Your emotions that are a roller coaster, your mind that is so quick to give in to the pressure of lies, your passions that are self-centered – they can’t be understood. They are sick and they need to be redeemed by the blood of Jesus. That brings me back to today. Each day we wake up to a battle for our hearts. The moment you open your eyes, Satan is doing all he can to discourage, destroy, and undermine. But God is greater in this battle. His truth trumps Satan’s wily schemes. His grace redeems our sickly hearts and His mercy gives us a fresh start.

Dr. Martin Lloyd Jones once said “Most of my unhappiness in life is due to the fact that I am listening to myself rather than talking to myself.” I would completely agree with Dr. Jones! We listen to lies and let the flaming arrows pierce our hearts instead of fighting back with truth. What if we spoke truth the moment we began to listen to the lies? What if we claimed the promises of God instead of thinking of them as a good idea rather than a reality?

God is faithful and glorious and strong. Through Him, we areΒ more than conquerers. This day, talk to yourself. Not the kind of talk that glorifies you. The kind of talk that glorifies God. Quote Scripture to yourself. And here’s a crazier thought – say it out loud. This may feel odd at first, but you will be amazed at the power this has. Romans 10:17 tells us “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing though the word of Christ.” Faith comes from hearing, so why not speak God’s truth out loud so we hear it and believe? When I obey this and speak His Word, there is an immediate power that fills the air. God is in His Word. And His Word is mighty to save.

Speak to yourself. And listen to God’s truth. Fight the good fight of faith with the weapons of the Word. In this you will have victory and God will get incredible glory!

I want to live the overcomer life through Jesus. And I am praying you will join me!

speaking truth today,

Gretchen

I just found your blog by accident this morning, and this message REALLY speaks to my heart! Finding your blog post today was orchestrated by the Lord. I have been struggling with spiritual warfare for a while and this message has really helped me understand exactly how to stand up to the enemy, through SPEAKING God’s Word. Hearing the Word being spoken out loud does seem to be so much more powerful! Thank you so much and may God continue to bless you and bless others through your blog!

  14. Nikki says:

This is so encouraging to read today! I always find myself internalizing things to the point where they become twisted and my emotions and thoughts follow suit. I completely misunderstand the world and what God’s purpose is for me that day, and on and on it goes. But it’s so true that when there’s a constant flow of Truth from God’s Word that I consciously speak and keep in mind throughout the day then my perspective is set right and I can seek God’s purpose for that day, and for the week, and for my life; I can rest in His promises rather than my fears.
