Breathe Deep, Part 1

April 21, 2014  - By Gretchen Saffles

This post is the first of a Bible Study I will be sharing called “A God-Sized Love Story.” If you would like email updates when each post goes out to follow along, sign up to the right. I look forward to sharing my journey with you!

Once upon a time… These four little words ring a bell in the heart of every girl. Dreams awaken, imagination is ignited, and each page of the story is anxiously turned as we wonder what is around the corner! We always know how the story ends. Happily Ever After, right? However, this story is no fairy-tale. It is not a myth that a scribe sat down to write one day. It is not a dream that a human comprised. It is the truth. It is His story. It is your life.

You were created for this ending. The Author of all time, Elohim, your Creator, holds the pen to this book and is composing the most beautiful story, a melody that is meant to be sung for all eternity. If you let Him write and don’t try to scribble in your own happenings and scenarios, you’ll soon read through the pages in wonder and awe at what He has done. Because one thing is sure: Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh {the God of Now/the Great I AM} is doing something.

Let’s explore the beginning of all life. May your eyes be opened to the most beautiful love story of all time and your heart grasp that this story is about the Savior of the world! Your life is a masterpiece by the Greatest Author. I am just a hand He is writing with to to make much of Jesus.

____________________________________________________________

In the beginning of all time, Elohim {Creator God} formed the world we live in with His very hands and perfectly creative mind. Crystal blue skies, dreamy starry nights, exquisite flourishing green plants, crawling microscopic creatures and massive animals. He dreamed up and fashioned every single element and being on earth into existence! (Genesis 1) With His own flawless, pure eyes, El Roi {the God Who Sees} beheld His creation and said one thing, “It is good.” Yet, the project of Earth was not complete.

YHWH {the LORD} finished His masterpiece by creating man and woman, the two beings He made for His own companionship, to be His best friends and bring Him glory. They walked in the garden with Him. They talked to Him face to face. It was beautiful and perfect, and they were unblemished in the very presence of Holy God. He created (yatsar) Adam’s body from the dust of the earth. The life in Adam’s soul came from the air that flowed out of the nostrils of God. Thus began the very foundation of existence; life only comes from God.

Breathe in. Breathe out. That very breath you just took was a cry for YHWH. Because just as the LORD’s breath brought life into Adam’s soul, it is breath that keeps us alive. Scholars say that the name of God, YHWH, is unable to be pronounced, and the closest way to say His name is through your breath. Breathe in. Breathe out. By the end of this day, you will have breathed approximately 23,000 times. Breathe in. Breath out. That is what your life is all about. It is about spending your life and using your breaths to make much of Jesus, praising God, your Creator and the Sustainer of your life. I pray that God would open your eyes to see the tapestry of His love story, our messy lives, and the redemption and hope YHWH offers us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith.

Be Still

In Psalms 46:10, God tells us to “Be still (or cease striving) and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in all the earth!” Be still before your Creator and steady your heart for His hands to write truth on it. How different would our lives look if we spent a majority of our time on our knees? We would remember that our breathe is not guaranteed. It is a gift of the YHWH, it is our cry to Him. With every breath, may we always remember that HE is God.

breathing out praise with you,

Gretchen
