Drink Deep From The Well

Hey Friends!

Tomorrow we begin studying through the book of 1 Peter together! I am so excited to uncover hidden gems in the Word of God with you. I pray that just as women in ancient times would go to the well each morning and evening for life-giving water, that we too would come to the well of God’s Word each day to drink deeply of that which satisfies. We live in a dry and parched world, and the only place we will be refreshed, renewed and filled with the life and strength we need to live is Scripture. I believe the Lord wants to teach us something new together as we cherish His Word and seek wisdom from Peter’s epistle. This is going to be a five-week study. Each week you will receive a reading guide with the verses we are going to study Monday-Friday.

The purpose of this group study is for us to encourage one another in the Word, keep each other accountable, and share the love of Christ as we learn His truth and seek to live it! As a part of our group study, I would love for you to comment below with your name, email address and Instagram handle so that we can uplift each other through multiple avenues! As you study 1 Peter, I want to challenge you to use your social media presence for the glory of God. Make your posts mean something. When the Lord teaches you something new from 1 Peter, share a picture with the Gospel truth. Let’s be the fragrance of Christ to those scrolling through their feeds throughout the day. Let’s use our influence to make much of Jesus!

We can have a group hashtag to share what God is teaching us throughout our journey! Feel free to use #LLB1Peter and #lifelivedbeautifully. If you have a “Give Me Jesus” journal, be sure to tag #givemeJesusjournal to connect with others who are using theirs!

1 Peter

My passion is for women to fall in love with Christ through His Word. Our lives will never be as Jesus intended them to be if we don’t spend time in His Word. The main excuses women use about having a quiet time is that they don’t have enough time, they don’t understand when they read, they don’t know where to start and they think it is relevant. All relationships take work and time, including our relationship with God. God doesn’t want us to be spoon-fed as believers. As a matter of fact, 1 Peter 2:2 tells us to long for, or desire and pursue, pure spiritual milk so that we might grow. Babies don’t grow unless they are fed nourishing foods and milk. Once they begin to grow they are weaned off of milk to solid foods. As believers, we go through the same process. The more we read Scripture, the hungrier we become for the meat of God’s Word.

Each day as you open the Word to study, be prepared for God to do something new. If you have never studied a book in the Bible before, here is how I go about studying:

  • Be Still & Know: I have my quiet times in the early morning. My usual routine is to wake up, grab a cup of coffee and then go sit on our green couch with my Bible, journal and pen. Over the years I have learned the importance of steadying my heart before I read the holy truth of Scripture. We can enter into the presence of God at any time. As Ecclesiastes 5:1-2 says, we shouldn’t be hasty in coming to God’s presence.
  • Read: First, I read study the context and author of the book. Most of the New Testament letters were written by Paul, but 1 Peter was written by Peter. We will study his life as an apostle and how that is significant in his writing of the book. Here are questions to ask: Who is writing this? Why? What is the main message of the book? What were the people struggling with? You can find answers to many of these questions in a study Bibles or commentaries. I use trusted online commentaries such as Blue Letter Bible, Precept Austin, Desiring God and Bible Hub. You simply type in the book or verse you are looking for and can read what pastors and theologians have said about the book.
  • Dig Deep: As I begin to study the text, I read and reread the verse. Kay Arthur’s precept Bible studies have taught me to circle and underline phrases that are repeated and theme messages. I write notes throughout my Bible as I study because I am a visual learner. I also read several different versions of the text, usually using Bible Hub, and then I write down words, phrases or anything that stands out to  me. Sometimes this process goes on for a while. Ask questions. Read verses the verses that are listed in your Bible that are connected to where you are. John Piper said the Bible is like a chain and not a strange of pearls because everything is linked together.

1 Peter

  • Deeper: If a certain word, verse of phrase captures my attention and I want to go even deeper into the meaning, I will study the Greek and Hebrew meanings of the word using StudyLight. The Old Testament was written in Hebrew and the New Testament in Greek and Aramaic. Greek and Hebrew words have a beautiful depth in their meanings. For example, when we read the word “love” in our Bible, it always appears the same. But in Greek, there are five different words for “love” — all with different meanings. Knowing what words the verse is using gives me a fuller understanding of what the word means.
  • Ask and Apply: Ask the Lord what He is teaching me from this text. How should my life be different? What steps of obedience do I need to take be conformed to the image of Christ?

Before you read the post each day, study the Word for yourself. David Platt said “The Word of God and Spirit of God are enough in the people of God to enjoy and spread the worship of God.” If you are a Christ-follower, you have the Word of God and the Spirit of God in you. That is enough to understand the truth of Scripture! This is going to be an amazing journey. So glad you are joining me!

your sister,

Gretchen

This is a great idea! I’m so disconnected since I got pregnant and had my sweet baby. This will give me some focus when I’m trying to spend time with God at 5 AM while pumping so I can get ready for work! What better way to dig into the word than with a sweet lady from Ms. Carla’s Bible Study!

I am inspired every day by you, Gretchen. Thank you for being courageous and faithful with what God has put on your heart. I’ve been struggling to feel refreshed and find my heartbeat with the Lord in my 8-5 work days… I’m hoping the encouragement of the Word and doing this with others will help.
