Chase Jesus

A Heavenly Pursuit

“The man who has God for his treasure has all things in One." A. W. Tozer

Jen Wilkin said in her book Women of the Word, "The God of the Bible is too lovely to abandon for lesser pursuits." (p. 46) The more we pick up our forks and bring our empty cups to the Word of God, the more we will be filled up and satisfied with truth that gives us life and hope. It is through studying the Bible that we get to know our Maker; this is no small thing! Rather, it is an incredible gift and privilege.  Warren Wiersbe once said that "It is good to study the Word of God, but this should better help us know the God of the Word." We study the Bible in order to know the Lord more, not just to store up knowledge in our minds. This heavenly pursuit is the only pursuit that will bring our souls satisfaction, life, and peace.

There is no greater pursuit in this life than the pursuit of God.

Through studying the Bible, we pursue a deep, abiding relationship with God. The more time we spend with Him, the better we will know Him, just like it would be with a friend or a spouse. When we spend time with the God who made time, we can trust that He will also give us the time we need to accomplish what needs to be done in our days.

The Word of God is worthy of our time. There is no other book that has been given the same living, breathing qualities that are attributed to the Bible. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 describes the Word of God as inspired. Every word has been breathed out by God. Hebrews 4:12 also tells us that the Word of God is living and active, sharper than any double-edged sword. The Bible is flawless, forever, and it changes us. Pursue knowing the Word in order to know the Author, your Maker, Jesus.

Respond + Reflect:

We are all chasing something; whether it be followers, money, clothing, affirmation, love, or companionship. We were made to chase. In the Bible we are told to "seek first the kingdom of God" and to seek the face of God (Matthew 6:33, Psalm 27:8). Jesus is worthy of your pursuit. Instead of chasing after things that will fade away, chase Jesus. He promises that when we seek Him, we will find Him. Write Psalm 27:8 in your journal today.

Take time to pause, pray, and praise the Lord that because of Christ's death on the cross, we no longer pursue the things of this world that will fade away. We now pursue Christ! Write Philippians 3:12-14 in your journal  and spend time meditating on those words.

I’ve been experiencing that there is no lasting peace or hope or joy when chasing after things that fade away. Only the pursuit of Jesus provides what my souls craves. Thank you so much for this beautiful reminder.
